Healthier Me: Body Image and Media Literacy

This post was written as part of Katja's Mission: Healthier Me Challenge.

Getting healthy is something I've been thinking about a lot lately, both from a physical and emotional perspective. I've come to believe that the physical self has much more of a correlation to the mental and emotional health than I had previously thought. A big part of me wanting to be healthier is to be a better role model. I'm trying to find a balance in my mind and body that I can pass down to my kids, so they will be more self-confident and independent.

At seven, Roo is very precocious and wants nothing more than to be a teenager. Lately, she's been asking me if she looks fat. I didn't expect her to be worried about her body image this early. She knows that I've been dieting lately and I wonder if that has impacted her self-consciousness. I try very hard not to whine about my appearance in front of the kids but I am sure she has noticed how I avoid being photographed and take an inordinate amount of time to get ready to go out because I hate the way I look in clothes. I don't want her to ever feel that way.

I want Roo to be more self-confident, physically, than I was growing up. I always thought I was clumsy, so I never wanted to play sports. Surprise, surprise: I'm actually pretty coordinated and strong. Not very graceful, necessarily, but not the lumbering oaf that I envisioned ever since a kid at day camp in NJ called me an elephant when I was running past him on the playground. That must have been fifth or sixth grade, not a particularly good time to be dressed down by a member of the opposite sex. I was convinced I was fat and unattractive, which in retrospect seems pretty ridiculous since I wore a size 3/4 at my high school graduation. Looking at old photos, it's obvious that most of my issues were in my own head. How can I keep my kids from going through that?

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a special Healthy Media Images for Girls community event sponsored by the Girl Scouts of the Kansas Heartland. Katherine Schwarzenegger was there in support of her new book Rock What You've Got: Secrets to Loving Your Inner and Outer Beauty from Someone Who's Been There and Back and participated in a panel discussion about media consumption and body image. Katherine is the progeny of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver and a beautiful, poised 21 year old college junior. She spoke movingly about the importance of family and open communication in interpreting and counteracting disparate and potentially damaging media messages.

Her story and interest in empowering girls were moving but the emotional core of the event was the question and answer period. Girls ranging from about ten to college-aged told their stories of feeling ostracized for being different. Some had even been bullied. It was eye-opening and made me worry even more about what Roo will have to go through. Technology has moved so quickly in the years since she was born (the iPod is only a couple of years older than she is!) and more and more, kids are growing up intertwined with it. They're going to have even more to deal with than just playground taunts because the whole world is open to them– and vice-versa.

Now, more than ever, it's important for us to model healthy body images to our kids. We have to make sure that we're paying attention to what they're watching and seeing every day and keeping an open discussion about the media images that bombard them. Parents need to brush up on their own media literacy to improve their children's. Know what your own issues are and recognize them in your kids. Be aware of mixed signals that can confuse or influence behavior. Keep a running dialogue about your family's values and how they relate to what you see on TV or hear on the radio.

Since they started watching TV with commercials, I've made a point of explaining the concept of advertising to the kids. Just because something is on TV and looks amazing, doesn't mean it's really going to be fun. Roo rolls her eyes at me whenever I tell her what I like or don't like about her favorite shows. Just because someone says it's cool doesn't make it cool. I know it's probably like a broken record to her but I make a point of mentioning when a character is being too sassy or treating someone unkindly or spending too much time dwelling on boys or brand names. I do the same with Jasper, although I tend to bristle more at Roo's role models. It seems like they're all pop stars or models on Disney and Nickelodeon. It gives me hope when she latches onto something incongruous, like her love of PJ Harvey who definitely doesn't fit that mold.

How do you teach kids about media literacy and body image? What do you remember learning- right or wrong- from mass media as a child?

Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Skincare

People are pretty crazy loyal to Bare Escentuals and their 100% pure mineral makeup. There are a zillion imitators these days but they're the real deal, formulating products that not only camouflage flaws but actually work to fix them. I'm a wash and go girl, in general, so I look for beauty products that can multitask. One of their catchphrases is "makeup so pure you can sleep in it," which I absolutely love, so I was excited to hear that they have recently debuted bareMinerals Skincare.

I received a bareMinerals Skin Renewing 30 Day Trial kit, which includes generous sample sizes of Purifying Facial Cleanser, Purely Nourishing Moisturizer and Firming Eye Treatment. All products in the bareMinerals Skincare collection are powered by their proprietary RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex, a blend of 72 essential macro and micro minerals with three times the antioxidant capacity of blueberries or pomegranates. This antioxidant boost increases cell turnover, resulting in smoother skin, smaller pores and finer lines.

I liked how gentle the bareMinerals Skincare is. The formulas are creamy but lightweight and rinse clean. The cleanser worked well on my makeup without feeling like it was drying me out and the moisturizer and eye cream absorbed quickly without need to reapply– impressive since my skin has been parched all winter. I definitely see improvement in my skin texture, it looks firmer and more radiant. Glowy, if you will. I've even been asked about what I've changed, which I see as the ultimate endorsement!

Lexli Skin Care: 4 Simple Steps with the Power of Aloe

When I was growing up, my mom always kept an aloe plant around and she'd break off a chunk and rub the juicy goo on any kind of cut or scrapes, so I knew that aloe was supposed to have some kind of restorative power. What I did not realize as a child was that aloe contains over 75 nutrients such as minerals, amino acids, and a number of vitamins including B12, enzymes and more. In fact, aloe vera is one of the only known natural sources of vitamin B12 and has been used as a natural anti-inflammatory to treat eczema and dermatitis. It is a great natural emollient and cleanser for healing damaged skin.

Lexli makes pharmaceutical-grade skincare products that harness the healing properties of the aloe vera plant. Surprisingly, aloe absorbs into skin better than water to provide lasting moisture. While most skincare products are water-based, Lexli products use pharmaceutical-grade 100% aloe vera as their starting point.

I received the Lexli 30-Day Starter Kit, which contains trial sizes of five products: Aloe-Based Cleansing Lotion, Aloe-Based AloeGlyC Renewing Exfoliant, Aloe-Based Day Moisturizer with SPF 15 for Normal to Dry Skin, Aloe-Based Tone and Balance, and Aloe-Based Night Moisturizer. This set is a convenient way to try The Lexli 4-step System (cleanse/exfoliate/moisturize/protect) without investing in costly full sizes. It's also great for travel, once you realize how great the products work!

I like to try out skincare lines for a week or two before I write about them but I have to admit that I saw noticeable changes in my skin texture and radiance from the very first use. The AloeGlyC Renewing Exfoliant looks really odd at first, sort of an off-white cream speckled with bright green beads of vitamin C. It has an unusual, not necessarily unpleasant scent compared to the other products, which I attribute to the glycolic acid. It is phenomenal! It exfoliates dead skin while simultaneously soothing and moisturizing it. The website says you will see noticeable changes within three weeks with optimal results in three months, but I swear I saw improvement almost immediately. I also love the cooling effect of the Aloe-Based Tone and Balance mist and both of the moisturizers are effective without feeling heavy or greasy. The Aloe-Based Cleansing Lotion is concentrated but very gentle, too. The only thing missing from this kit, or from the Lexli line, in general, is an eye cream. Since puffy, dark circles are my personal trouble spot, I would love to have an aloe-based problem solver. Maybe they'll create one…

MommyJuice Wines

This weekend, we helped friends build a new raised garden bed. (Well, the menfolk were on the manual work detail and we of the fairer sex chatted and watched Judy can pickled brussels sprouts.) Being as three of us are moms– with one avowed abstainer, I figured it would be a great opportunity to test drive some wines I had received for review. The amusingly-named MommyJuice Wines was founded by an actual mom, Cheryl Murphy Durzy, who is a longtime wine industry veteran and proprietor of Clos LaChance Winery.

Far from being just a novelty, MommyJuice Red and White are sophisticated and easy-drinking wines that can accommodate a broad audience, from the wine-cooler guzzlers at bunco to the oenophiles at book club. These aren't just a cute label. (Although it is really a cute label…)

MommyJuice White is a very fruity Chardonnay. We all agreed that we tend to prefer drier whites, in general. It was lush, almost tropical and perhaps a bit sweeter than the whites that most of us usually buy– almost more like a dessert wine. It was really nice chilled, though, and would make a killer tropical sangria.

MommyJuice Red was our favorite. It's a smooth blend (77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot) with a nice finish and would go with everything from burgers to beef tenderloin. Imminently drinkable. Delicious, in fact.

A case of MommyJuice Red Wine would be a nice Mother's Day present. Or perhaps a bottle or two and a "When I whine, mommy wines" toddler tee or onesie. I love the fact that you can mail-order wine. Who knew?

Leila Lou by Rosie Jane Giveaway

Leila Lou by Rosie Jane is a new fragrance collection that I am totally obsessed with. It's a light, clean floral with citrusy and grassy tendencies. This sounds bizarre but to me Leila Lou is the olfactory equivalent of walking barefoot through a freshly mown yard. Rosie Jane, a mother of two, confided to me that she was inspired to create the fragrance to feel instantly fresh without actually having to wash. I know that feeling well!

I've had samples in my possession for a week and I'm already half through them.… Seriously– I reapply the perfume oil a bazillion times a day and probably look insane, since I sniff my wrists constantly. Bob says it smells even better on my skin. The Leila Lou perfume oil comes in a convenient 5ml rollerball vial that fits into the teeniest of pockets so you can reapply as necessary. (Like a bazillion times a day, that would be my recommendation.) There's also a great incentive to recycle: Leila Lou Give Back Program. If you return three roller bottles, you receive a fourth one free!

Leila Lou by Rosie Jane is also available as a body lotion. It makes your skin soft and fragrant. If you use it in combination with the perfume oil, it lasts even longer. If you want your home to smell like Leila Lou, they offer a slow-burning candle in a simple but elegant glass votive.

Mama Mio Mighty Moisture

Mama Mio is a beauty brand I fell in love with during my first pregnancy. Their Tummy Rub Stretchmark Oil was my daily ritual indulgence. Post-pregnancy, I found myself addicted to their body firming lotions. Boob Tube Bust and Neck Firmer is still a big fave, almost four years post-partum!

Now they are introducing Mama Mio High Protein Face Care, collection of anti-aging formulas packaged with two 30-second Face Fitness exercises to change the way you look AND feel. There are five products in the inaugural line, incuding a cleanser, eye serum and three targeted moisturizers. I received the Mama Mio Mighty Moisture to try out.

Mighty Moisture is an all-in-one moisturizer with a lightweight feel but heavy duty impact. Within one use, my skin texture was noticeably smoother and more even. I was skeptical at the claims that "one pump is enough," especially since my skin was parched from winter dryness, but it is incredibly emollient and left a pleasant lavender scent on my now-dewy fresh face. The Face Fitness exercises, Rosies and Ponytail Pull-Ups feel a bit silly but are quick and remarkably effective. If you want more of the nuts and bolts on how it works, watch this video:

I am dying to try Eye Know Moisturising Eye Serum next because dark circles and puffy eyes are my biggest beauty problems these days. If it's half as effective as Mighty Moisture, I will be impressed!

Take 10 Beverages

Take 10 Beverages are pretty much the opposite of energy drinks: organic herbal ingredients blended together in a sugar-free, calorie-free shot meant to support relaxation and sleep by reducing mental and physical stress. These little (2 oz.) bottles provide much-needed downtime to frazzled, overworked people. Like parents.

I tried Take 10 to Sleep (blackberry) and Take 10 to Relax (white grape) and was surprised at how effective they were. I don't like taking sleep aids in case they make me groggy the next morning but I didn't have any after-effects from Take 10 to Sleep and slept soundly through the night. I am especially fond of Take 10 to Relax, which proved very useful in taking the edge off when I had one of those days where the kids just won't stop acting up. You can also take a swig and save the rest for later, since the bottles screw closed. The labels come off of the bottles, too, and are the perfect size to refill with shampoos or lotions for air travel, which is a nice bonus.

Visit Take 10 on Facebook or on Twitter for more information.

NXE Recline iPhone Case Giveaway

There are a lot of options for iPhone cases these days. My current favorite is the Recline by NXE. It's an ultra- slim black matte plastic shell with a built-in kickstand. It has elegant cutaways for ports and buttons, plus a plush lining to pamper your phone. Simple but beautifully effective for both horizontal and vertical viewing.

I love the way the Recline feels– it has a soft, almost rubbery texture that makes it easy to hold on to. I carry the model with the pink kickstand and Bob prefers the all-black version.

Boar's Head Giveaway

***WINNER PICKED 4/28 WITH RANDOM.ORG***

***CONGRATULATIONS, Nancy!!!***

her comment...
My favorite sandwich is roast beef on whole wheat bread with lots of veggies and colby-jack cheese!

I fell in love with Boar's Head in Memphis. There was a sandwich shop there that touted its superiority but I had never really given that much thought to deli meat and cheese. It was an epiphany. When we moved to Wichita, I was glad to see that there was a huge Boar's Head selection at our local Dillon's. We typically keep their Maple Honey Turkey and Colby Jack cheese in the house, plus sliced Pepperoni and assorted mustards and sauces.

Aside from pure deliciousness, Boar's Head is great for people on restricted diets. Their website has lot of info on lowering sodium, eating Gluten-free, heart-healthy deli meats certified by the American Heart Association, and recipe suggestions for diabetics. I've been using their Nutrition Guide a lot, since I am trying to watch what I eat.

To enter and win a $25 gift card to try Boar's Head, please comment on this post and let me know what your favorite sandwich is.

Fill His Basket: Tenga Eggs

The following review is for adult eyes only because it involves sex. Mommy and daddy sex. (Everyone under 18 just clicked away, right?) No super explicit stuff here but the links might contain NSFW content. Consider yourself warned.

Since Easter is almost upon us, I thought I'd tell you about the innocuous looking Tenga Egg. Hidden inside the discreet matte plastic egg is a phtalate-free TPE donut that unfurls into a sleeve for self-love. (Assuming you have a penis, that is.) Each Tenga Egg has a distinct interior texture that gives a different sensation– Silky, Stepper, Twister, Spider, Clicker, and Wavy.

They're kind of like big, squishy condoms. Like condoms, you must leave some room at the tip when rolling one on or else risk ripping. If you're careful, though, Tenga Eggs can be washed and re-used multiple times. Each one comes with a tiny packet of lube, too, so you can send one off with your traveling man. Or college-bound son, if that's the kind of mom you are. (I don't judge!)

Like most Japanese design, the Tenga Egg is simple but ingenious and gorgeous to look at. If you don't have a penis handy, you can also turn it inside out and use it to change things up with your favorite phallic object. Just saying.

In accordance to the FTC Guidelines and WOMMA Code of Ethics, I am disclosing that I received samples of the aforementioned adult novelty to facilitate this review. If you click on any of the links and end up buying anything, I could earn a few bits. Just so you know.
