Pinkalicious

I've written about how much we enjoy Boon and how their gorgeous high chair, the Flair, is probably the only item from their entire product line that we haven't tried. The only reason we never bought one is because it wasn't available yet when Roo was little and we got a bare bones Ikea wooden highchair and we could never justify buying another highchair, even though we really hate the big Swedish monolith and stub our toes on it daily. And now Jasper uses it and it still sucks. Perhaps even moreso since he's a climber and the thing doesn't have a harness. And Boon has just introduced a brand new color. Yes, it's true, there is now a Pink Flair Highchair!!!

Jasper wouldn't be too scarred if I strapped him into this at every meal, would he? We need a Pink Flair, right?!

25 Things About Me

Okay, I've been tagged on this several times on Facebook, so I'm posting it here if anyone wants to play along.

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.

(To do this, go to “notes” under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people (in the right hand corner of the app) then click publish.)

1. I am a lousy housekeeper and I don't particularly care, although I wish my house looked like something out of Dwell.

2. I have six cats and I am allergic to them all.

3. The first CD I ever bought was the import of Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim at Sound Exchange in Austin for my 18th birthday.

4. I had to buy a CD because my grandpa sent me a fancy CD player but no discs.

5. It irritates me when I encounter toilet paper that goes under instead of over. And it bothers me that it bothers me.

6. I was a Shoney's server in high school. Briefly. But I rocked the suntan hose and poly wrap skirt. I still have the "Try My Strawberry Pie" button I had to wear. Humiliating.

7. I never played with baby dolls or particularly liked kids before having Roo.

8. Now I can't imagine not having kids.

9. I've been a bargain hunter all my life. If someone gave me a pile of money and said "buy whatever you want" I would still troll thrift stores and clearance racks, looking for the score.

10. I've always been a total spelling and grammar Nazi but I swear the internets R makin me stoopid.

11. I am not a big outdoor person but I am working on it for my nature-loving brood.

12. I don't consider myself particularly shy but I hate talking about myself. And writing about myself.

13. I quit Japanese and Hebrew school when my parents divorced. They asked me if I wanted to keep taking extra classes and I said no. I was ten. I still regret it.

14. I was computer-phobic for much of my childhood and wish I had discovered Apple much, much sooner.

15. The longest I ever dated anyone before my husband was about three months. We dated for about four years before we got married.

16. I wish I'd dated more in high school and college. I think it would make being married easier. I don't argue effectively.

17. Most of my personality quirks are probably directly related to the fact that I was an only child who never really acted like a kid.

18. I am really happy that my kids do, indeed, act like children.

19. I never got past the first three chords on guitar.

20. I miss Seattle and Austin but not anywhere else I've lived.

21. I have two tattoos but I held out until I was 30 to get them.

22. I love that the internet allows people I haven't seen since junior high to find me.

23. If I could eat only pizza, spinach salad, and breakfast tacos for the rest of my life I could be happy. Oh, wait, I need chocolate, too.

24. I would like to be a more tolerant and relaxed person, in general, not only as a parent.

25. Coming up with 25 things to say about myself is really frickin' hard.

The Time is Nau

Nau is an amazing, environmentally conscious clothing company (produced responsibly and committed to sharing a percentage of each sale with different charities that you can choose from at checkout) that makes clothes for active people. I hesitate to call it activewear because it's so vastly different than the tracksuits and windbreakers that come to mind when you hear that term. Nau clothing for both men and women is sleek and urban in styling, even the items that are meant to be out in the elements. My favorites are the recycled, recyclable outerwear which is water resistant, windproof, and warm without being bulky. I was lucky enough to win a Profile Fleece Hoody in one of their regular email newsletter contests at the start of the cold season and I don't think I have taken it off since! It is that cozy and comfortable.

I like it so much, in fact, that I ordered one of the Men's Profile Fleece Hoodies for Bob!

Nau is having a secret subscriber sale that ends on February 1st, which gives you not only 40% off their normal retail price, but sale items are 60% off with the code OTGSPECIAL. Their prices are a bit higher than I usually like to spend but this brings them down to a relatively affordable level. (Sustainable, responsible options cost money, people!) Since I have been so thrilled with my Profile Fleece Hoody, I decided to get a longer coat option.

I really love the Modus Trench, which I think would look great on the back of a Vespa (not that I happen to have one), but I decided to go with the dressier Shroud of Purrin Trench since I've been lusting after it for about a year now. Did I make the right choice?

Quaker Start With Substance

Quaker Oats has launched an initiative, Start With Substance, to help you help others while enjoying the oatmeal you already know and love. From January 12-February 28, Quaker will donate one bowl of oatmeal to the hungry for every UPC code entered on their Facebook page. With your help, Quaker and their partner Share Our Strength, an organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger, hope to distribute one million bowls of oatmeal to those in need.

All you need to do to become part of the hunger solution is become a fan on the Quaker Facebook page and enter your Quaker Oats UPC codes on the sidebar. You can also print out the Quaker Man and submit photos of your family with him on the Facebook page, which is definitely amusing. (Leave your Quaker Man photo links in comments below so I can check yours out!)

I am participating in a 25 BLOGGERS/25 DAYS contest that is part of the Start With Substance program. If I refer the most readers to join the Start With Substance campaign, become fans on the Quaker Facebook page and post their Quaker Man pictures there in the next 24 hours, I will receive a $5000 donation to a hunger charity of my choice. So, obviously, I would love for you to comment here, comment there, go and comment everywhere! ( If you have a personal favorite hunger charity, feel free to mention it below, too, in case I win! Quaker Oats is also generously donating a case of oatmeal to my charity.) Two readers will be rewarded with coupons good for $1 off two Quaker Oats products which, I might add, are great tummy warmers on cold winter days. And, really, isn't giving its own reward? If you're Facebook all day, anyway (you know who you are!), please go and have a look at Start With Substance and see how you can help so many with so little effort…

You've Got Some Nerve

Looking for a Valentine's Gift with some oomph? Something sexier than a box of chocolates, slightly raunchier than lingerie, more permanent than roses? Might I suggest Nerve: The First Ten Years, a dayglo vinyl-covered volume compiling the best writing and photography from the first ten years of Nerve.com, which has been described as smart smut.

Nerve.com has spent the last decade showcasing the best in contemporary writing and photography about sex. I remember buying the magazine for the articles… And the pictures, I'll admit it! Featuring recognizable writers and photographers like Chuck Palahniuk, Jonathan Lethem, Richard Kern, Spalding Gray, and Alice Sebold, the decidedly non-glossy magazine and website raised the stakes in an oft-maligned genre. Arty, erotic and often thought-provoking, the essays, fiction and photos in Nerve: The First Ten Years make for a hefty coffee table book that you might want to hide from the kids for a couple more years…

Enter code "BEMINE" at checkout for 25% off Nerve: The First Ten Years (or any other titles!) plus free shipping at Chronicle Books.

Thank You, Friends

I have such great bloggy friends. This has been a dismally cold week although the sun is finally shining. What has been especially nice, though, is that we've received some sweet unexpected care packages from the proprietresses of Fractured Toy and Katydid and Kid. Aside from being daily blog reads, they dole out advice and humor and it's been a pleasure having them in my life. And did I mention that Kathleen knitted hats for all of us?! Check out her handiwork:

Are You A Smart Shopper?

The Smart Shopper is a handy little gadget that lets you manage your errands and grocery lists simply by speaking into it. It keeps track of your entries and when you are ready to shop, you can use the LED screen to sort items alphabetically by category and then print out a handy list to take with you.

The Smart Shopper mounts magnetically to your fridge or may be wall mounted so it's always close at hand for updates. My husband can never read my handwriting on the grocery list so it's nice to send him to the store with a printed copy!

Like A Big Pizza Pie

I could eat pizza every single day if my family would let me. Deep dish, thin crust, Chicago-style, New York-style, stuffed, wood-fired, Japanese okonomiyaki, whatever you can throw at me, I will probably like it. I feel a similar kinship to baked goods. In fact, I enjoy baking more than cooking, which might explain why pizza ranks so high upon my list. Imagine my excitement upon discovering My Pizza Cake, an online establishment dedicated to creating sweet treats that look exactly like your favorite savory pies. Sign me up!

We received the Must Have Meat cake, snuggled safely inside an iconic white pizzeria box shown above. Upon opening, it looks to be your ordinary, run-of-the-mill meaty pizza with pepperoni, sausage, bacon bits and a sprinkling of shredded parmesan:

But, no– it's a moist and delicious cake! With chocolate chips embedded in the batter, even. I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the flavor… how could a trompe l'oeil cake possibly taste good, too, right? I was wrong. The Must Have Meat Pizza Cake is really yummy. The cake is a bit denser than a standard cake, more like a pound cake or sour cream cake, and the toppings are really delicious. My favorite is the innovative crisped rice "sausage" although Roo favored the white chocolate "pepperoni" slices. I had to tell her not to steal all of them off the cake! The only complaint I had was the "sauce" was a little too sweet for me, but I usually have the same problem with cake frosting, too.

Bob wanted more chocolate (we're a family of choco-holics, I'm afraid) so next time we will have to try the Pizza Brownie Supreme which is perhaps less convincing from a visual perspective (who ordered the pumpernickel crust?!), but certainly more satisfyingly full of chocolatey goodness!

There are several other varieties, too, including a Create Your Cake option where you can pick your own toppings to make a truly custom My Pizza Cake. And wouldn't it be fun to serve up the Look Mom, I'm Eating My Veggies Pizza Cake below to a party of sullen pre-teens? Yes, I think it would.

Wordless Wednesday- Kooky Characters and Family Resemblances

Is Your Child U*Neak?

Roo hates wearing socks. It's kind of a pain in the butt, actually. When we received the amazing U*neaks sneakers that feature clear side panels to show off your funky sock wardrobe, I thought she might actually give the cozy footwarmers a try. See, the proprietary U*neaks socks (available in ankle and crew lengths) have totally different patterns on each side, so you can switch feet and have a completely different look. But, no, my weirdo kid just wore them barefoot so you could see her fleshy foot through the sides… kind of evoking a sporty version of vinyl stripper shoes. (The flowing princess nightgown doesn't help matters much, either.)

Thankfully, she's come around. It's 15º out right now, so that's a good thing to ward off frostbite. Plus her pink suede Paris Z-Strap U*neaks are super stinking cute with everything in her wardrobe.

They even look good with dollar store princess socks!

While U*neaks are definitely great for girls who like to switch up their style, I think they're even more exciting for boys since their fashion choices are usually much more limited. Crazy socks are a way for even the preppiest boy to cut loose a little! I'm actually looking forward to Jasper hitting a size 8 so he can wear the suave and skater-ish Camel Rev U*neaks.

If your child is a movie buff, perhaps they would enjoy the new line of Madagascar U*neaks Socks that feature all their favorite characters.

If you sign up for the U*neaks newsletter, you can get 40% off your first purchase! Wow. It's a great deal, especially considering shipping is free for orders over $20…

Peekaboo, No One Sees You Nursing…

***WINNER PICKED 2/10 WITH RANDOM.ORG***

***CONGRATULATIONS, #135 •´.¸¸.•¨¯`♥.Erin.♥´¯¨•.¸¸.´•!!!***

her comment...
Uh clearly this one evaded me because I would have entered a looong time ago! :(

I like the spring dress and the tunic! I love this idea.

Peekaboo is a stylish collection of clothing for expectant and nursing mothers. What makes it so different in the realm of breastfeeding-friendly apparel is its sleek styling. All of the pieces are made from soft, stretchy jersey fabrics that are comfortable AND sexy.

The fabric drapes beautifully, so Peekaboo garments embrace your shape, whether you're boasting a beautiful belly or some post-partum pudge that you'd rather hide. The opening is elegant in its simplicity: two sheer layers overlap discretely. There is a sweet little duckling printed on the interior of the flap to give baby something to look at and mama a way to keep track of which breast is up next.

Peekaboo is also unusual because the stretch of the jersey fabric allows you to wear the same garment through your entire pregnancy and beyond. The fabric is a lightweight knit that is perfect for warm weather (think your favorite t-shirt!), but the styles offered are great layering pieces for cooler climates, too. I received the cowl neck top which is one of their Fall/Winter items. It has the lovely ruching on the hip and belly and a graceful cowl that frames necklaces beautifully. My favorite thing about it, though, is the styling of the sleeves. Too often belled sleeves look like flapping wings but these are very subtly belled.

Peekaboo's tunics and dresses make me wish I was pregnant again! They look so pretty and also so blissfully comfortable. The obi sash on the tunic is just stunning.

And the Peekaboo summer dress features adorable fluttery cap sleeves that remind me of tea dresses from the twenties. (How thrilling it must be to be able to wear such a pretty dress without wondering how you're going to be able to feed the baby!)

Peekaboo has offered one lucky reader the chance to win a 3/4 sleeve top. It features a scoop neck and the same gorgeous ruching pictured in the cap sleeve top below, only with 3/4 length sleeves. (duh!) It's available in four colors that will match pretty much everything you own.

To enter and win your Peekaboo 3/4 sleeve nursing top, please comment on this post with your your favorite item from their website and your nearest Peekaboo retailer. (Keep in mind that if there isn't one near you, there are several online options and you may also inquire directly via email!)

Entries will be accepted through February 9th and I'll pick the winner using Random.org. All readers are eligible, no matter where you live, thanks to our generous sponsor! Only one entry/comment per person, please.

For an additional entry, post my button on your blog, fave me on Technorati or subscribe via email or subscribe via reader and leave an extra comment letting me know.

Make sure you leave an email address in your comment or that you have one accessible on your blog so you can be contacted if you win! Or, you may choose to check for your nickname at Prizey.Fetch, a site that compiles winners in one convenient place:

Excuses, Excuses

I've been an absent blogger lately, sorry for the dead air. Jasper is teething (canines are cresting!), Roo is being a handful, and I am finding it hard to carve out writing time. Please bear with me! This week will hold many, many new reviews and giveaways. You will definitely want to check back…

New Years Eve Sweater and Skirt

A new year, a new Grosgrain giveaway! This is an elegant winter ensemble, perfect for inaugurating something. Or someone.

new years

Get Outta Town!

No one would ever call me a snow bunny. Winter sports are not my scene since I pretty much despise cold weather and going downhill fast. In deference to my kids who are snow lovers, however, I know I'm going to need to bite the bullet and take them to a ski resort one of these days. I'm thinking they can hit the slopes with grandpa and my uncles while mommy hangs out drinking hot cocoa and rocking furry boots apres-ski style… It would be nice to find a spot that can accommodate activities for all ages, outdoors AND indoors.

Park City Mountain Resort is chock full of options for the pickiest of families. I love that their website offers printable Personal Mountain Tours that can be customized according to skill level or interests. If skiing and snowboarding isn't your bag, there are historic tours available to teach you about Park City's illustrious past including its inception in 1884 as a silver mining town. Hey, if skiing is your bag, you can actually take the tour on skis, too!

There are tons of great family activities that don't include skis at Park City Mountain Resort. I know my kids would go batty for the Alpine Coaster, a gravity-propelled mile long roller coaster that loops through the beautiful scenery.

Other Park City Mountain Resort winter activities include snowmobiling, sleigh rides, ice skating and even dog sledding. Even as cold-phobic as I am, I wouldn't be able to resist the tubing at Gorgoza Park, where you will also find Fort Frosty for the under-6 set and mini-snowmobiling. Besides, there's a toasty yurt to hang out in afterwards!

Park City Mountain Resort also features six on-mountain restaurants and it's the only area resort that has direct lift access to the shops, boutiques and galleries of Main Street. See? Something for everyone.

Visit The Adventure blog to get in-depth reviews and Park City Mountain Resort travel planning ideas from locals and repeat visitors. While you're there, enter the drawing for a Family Winter Vacation for four (two adults and two kids, 12 and under) to Park City, Utah, including 3-nights lodging, 4-days of lift tickets and ski/snowboard school for the kids.

Fill out the online request form to receive the 2008-2009 Park City Vacation Planner in your mailbox.

Obama Nation

There is a surge of excitement in this country that I hope continues to build over the next four years. I never thought I would live to see a black President but even more unlikely and thrilling to me is seeing a Hawaiian in the highest office in the nation! I never expected to see my alma mater's marching band leading off the inaugural parade. Or to see the Prez saying "howzit" while his whole family gives shaka…

Growing up on an island where almost everyone is a mix of races forces you to be more tolerant, to try and find common ground. I have always thought the world would be a better place if there was more kamaaina spirit across the globe. Sure, you still make fun of other ethnic groups, but everyone eats everyone else's food and takes the best parts of each culture as their own. Perfect.

There is a great New York Times article that breaks down the multi-racial background of both the President and the First Lady and shows what a patchwork of ethnicities and faiths they come from. I find that incredibly inspiring. The melting pot is actually in the White House!

Wordless Wednesday- vikings, bespectacled, sister's clothes

No, Jasper doesn't usually wear pink bejeweled t-shirts. He got messy at grandma's without spare clothes so she put him in one of Roo's old shirts. I love that it says "what happens at grandma's stays at grandma's!" No, Roo didn't get glasses. I got a new pair and she tried some on. Yes, Jasper is a tiny pirate/viking who refuses to conform to your rules about naptime…
